Do Forex Brokers and Fintechs Really Need OOH in Indonesia?

Let’s be honest here. OOH like billboards, digital OOH, and video billboards is not cheap. To make it worse, it is hard to measure properly, let alone expect some instant direct return from it. If you are a marketer in a forex broker or fintech company, and someone says, “let’s put up a billboard and see how much FTD we get,” your jaw will probably drop for a couple of seconds for no clear reason. So the real question is not whether OOH looks nice. The real question is whether forex brokers or fintech brands in Indonesia actually need it.

Do forex brokers and fintechs really need OOH?

Yes, but not for the reason most teams think.

The mistake is assuming OOH should behave like performance media. It usually doesn’t, or at least not that simple. Not in forex. Not in fintech. Not in any category where the buyer is being asked to trust a brand with money, savings, credit, or the possibility of losing capital. In those categories, OOH is not there to replace paid social, search, affiliates, CRM, or retargeting. It is there to make the whole machine feel more believable.

That matters in Indonesia more than some marketers want to admit. This is a very digital market, with around 230 million internet users by the end of 2025 and 180 million social media user identities, but it is also deeply urban and very exposed to public media in daily movement. Around 60% of the population lives in urban areas, which means finance brands are not only seen on screens, they are judged in public space too.

Why does OOH still matter in a market that is already so digital?

Because digital gets attention, but public visibility still helps create legitimacy.

Indonesia is one of the most mobile-first consumer markets in the region, and the country’s digital economy keeps expanding. But money-related decisions do not happen from pure convenience alone. People still look for signals that a brand is real, established, and not going to disappear tomorrow. That is exactly where OOH earns its place.

The ad market direction tells the same story. Dentsu projected Indonesia’s 2025 ad market to grow by 5.1%, driven by digital, OOH, and TV, with OOH itself expected to grow about 7%. That is not happening because marketers suddenly became nostalgic about billboards. It is happening because public media still does a job digital alone does not finish.

What makes billboard performance feel so frustrating?

It feels frustrating because the spend is visible immediately, while the effect is delayed and messy.

You can see the production cost, media cost, location cost, and campaign length very clearly. What you usually cannot see clearly is which exact user saw the billboard, searched later, clicked a branded ad, compared reviews, downloaded the app, waited three days, completed KYC, and then made the first deposit. The path is real, but it does not look neat in attribution dashboards. That is where many finance teams panic a bit too early.

Why is “how many FTDs from this billboard?” the wrong first question?

Because it skips the actual job OOH is doing.

If the first question is only about direct FTD, then OOH will often look weak. The better first question is this: did OOH increase brand trust, search intent, conversion efficiency, lead quality, branded traffic, or reactivation confidence? In trust-heavy categories, those are not side effects. Those are part of the return.

What broken assumption keeps showing up in finance marketing?

The broken assumption is that media should only be judged by what it converts directly.

That logic works fine in some ecommerce setups. It breaks down in finance. Forex brokers and fintech brands are not just selling an offer. They are asking users to cross a psychological line. Deposit money. Borrow money. Store money. Trade with money. That line is much harder to cross if the brand feels invisible in the real world.

This is where a lot of smart marketers still get trapped. They say they want “performance,” but what they really mean is “perfect attribution.” Those are not the same thing. Sometimes the best-performing media is the one that removes doubt before the click even happens.

Why does OOH matter more for trust-heavy categories like forex and fintech?

Because trust is part of the funnel, and takes a very crucial role in conversion.

For forex brokers, the trust problem is obvious. Bappebti said it blocked 225 illegal PBK / commodity futures trading websites up to the second week of May 2025, specifically to reduce the promotional space for illegal operators. That alone tells you what the market looks like from a customer’s point of view: many people do not start from “which platform has the best spread?” They start from “is this broker even safe?”
”
For fintech, the problem is different but related. OJK said there were 95 licensed LPBBTI / fintech lending providers as of late 2025, while also reporting large volumes of complaints across fintech and continuing enforcement against illegal lenders and non-compliant advertising. That means users are not only comparing features. They are also looking for reassurance that the company is supervised, active, and accountable.

What kind of trust signal does public visibility create?

It creates the signal that the company is real enough to stand in public and be seen.

That sounds simple, maybe even too simple, but it matters. A broker or fintech app that shows up on a major road, in transit media, or on a premium digital screen signals scale, permanence, and accountability. Users may not say it out loud like that, but they read it. Public visibility says: this brand is not hiding.

What is the other benefit of OOH that marketers usually ignore?

The other benefit is that OOH reassures existing users, yes your existing user, the one that actively trades with your platform, not just potential new ones.

This part gets ignored way too often, underrated. Many OOH conversations are framed around acquisition, but in forex and fintech there is another layer: your existing users are also watching. They already deposited. They already registered. They already handed over personal data. Some of them already bring you profit. And one of their biggest fears, especially in finance, is that the company suddenly disappears or runs away with their money.

So when they keep seeing your brand in public, that visibility acts like proof of life. It tells them the business is still operating, still investing, still present, still out there. It reduces the silent anxiety that often sits in the background of finance products. In some cases, that reassurance is not just a branding bonus. It can reduce churn pressure, withdrawal panic, and trust erosion before those problems become expensive.

Why can OOH calm existing users, not just attract new ones?

Because visibility works as reassurance after conversion too.

A user who already knows your brand does not need another awareness message. What they need is confirmation that they made a safe choice, or sometimes the choice that makes them proud. OOH can quietly do that. It tells them, again and again, that the brand is not vanishing in the dark. For a forex broker, that matters because clients are exposed to market risk and platform risk at the same time. For fintech, it matters because users worry about access, fraud, data safety, and service continuity.

How should forex brokers use OOH differently from other brands?

Forex brokers should use OOH as a legitimacy layer, not as a leads generator, or even deposit machine.

That means the creative strategy cannot behave like a generic trading ad. In Indonesia, any serious broker is operating in a category where illegal players are active and public skepticism is reasonable. So the job of OOH is to compress trust into a few seconds. Regulated status. Real office presence. Education-first posture. Scam awareness. Risk honesty. Those signals matter more than flashy promises.

The more interesting point is this: for brokers, OOH often works best when it makes all the other channels convert better. A user sees the billboard on Monday, searches the brand on Wednesday, reads reviews on Friday, joins a webinar, opens a demo, gets nurtured, then finally funds an account. The billboard did not “close” the FTD. But it helped make the FTD possible.

How should fintech brands use OOH differently from brokers?

Fintech brands should use OOH according to the kind of trust they need to build.

Payments, wallets, and QRIS-linked ecosystems benefit from OOH because these are behavior products. Bank Indonesia said QRIS had reached 57 million users and 39.3 million merchants by mid-2025, with more than 93% of merchants being MSMEs. In categories like this, OOH helps reinforce habit and familiarity. The user sees the brand everywhere, then sees it again at checkout, and the brand feels normal. That is a very strong position to own.

Lending and BNPL are different. Here, OOH can help scale recognition, but it also carries more downside if the messaging oversimplifies the product. When a category is already under regulatory attention and complaint pressure, public advertising that feels too easy, too frictionless, or too promise-heavy can create the wrong kind of growth. Sometimes fast growth is just future complaint volume wearing a nice outfit.

Digital banks and wealth products sit somewhere in the middle. They benefit from OOH when the brand needs to look stable, mainstream, and serious enough for larger balances or longer-term usage. In these segments, OOH can help move a brand from “app I saw online” to “institution I can trust.” Small difference in wording. Big difference in money.

How can you actually measure OOH for forex brokers or fintech?

You can measure OOH, just not with one lazy metric.

This is where the conversation needs to get better. The question is not whether OOH is measurable. The question is whether the team is willing to measure it properly across leading indicators, assisted conversion, and business outcomes. If you only ask for direct last-click FTD from a billboard, you are basically setting the channel up to fail.

Which OOH metrics matter before conversion happens?

The first group of metrics is about movement in demand and confidence.

For forex brokers or fintech, the most useful leading indicators usually include branded search lift, direct traffic lift, app store search lift, uplift in “safe / legal / review” query combinations, website engagement from exposed geographies, increased KYC starts, improved assisted conversion rate, and lower CPA in nearby digital campaigns while OOH is live.

For brokers specifically, look at search behavior around terms like brand name + review, brand name + aman, brand name + legal, brand name + Bappebti, brand name + penipuan. That search pattern tells you whether OOH is increasing curiosity only, or reducing trust friction too. For fintech, similar query clusters could include brand name + OJK, brand name + bunga, brand name + aman, or brand name + customer service. Those are not vanity signals. They show the psychology behind the funnel.

Which OOH metrics matter after conversion happens?

The second group of metrics is about what happens after the user enters the funnel.

For forex brokers, that can include first-time deposit rate, deposit amount quality, KYC completion rate, cost per qualified funded account, reactivation rate of dormant users, and even withdrawal-to-deposit behavior shifts in markets where trust volatility is high. For fintech, useful post-funnel metrics could include approval quality, first transaction rate, repayment quality, CAC payback, retention lift, reduced churn in exposed regions, and lift in returning active users. This is where a lot of teams miss something important: OOH can sometimes produce lower volume than social, but higher confidence users. That often means better downstream economics. Less panic. Less low-intent signups. Less junk volume. Better retention. Better user quality. Not always, but often enough to matter.

How do you connect OOH to deposits, registrations, and quality?

You connect it by building an attribution design before the campaign starts.

Use geo-lift testing between exposed and non-exposed cities or zones. Match OOH flight dates against branded search trends, app installs, registrations, KYC completions, and FTD movement. Use dedicated landing pages or custom offer paths where appropriate. Layer survey-based brand recall and trust studies. Watch changes in organic branded traffic and direct visits. Compare conversion rate of digital media in OOH-exposed areas versus non-exposed areas. And for CRM-heavy businesses, track whether existing clients in exposed areas show better activity, lower dormancy, or higher confidence metrics.

It’s not one method. It’s a stack. That’s the point.

What should a smart budget decision look like?

A smart budget decision is to stop expecting OOH to act like paid search, and start judging it by the role it actually plays.

If a forex broker or fintech brand in Indonesia is still proving product-market fit, still fixing compliance basics, or still struggling with onboarding, OOH probably should not be the hero channel yet. It may even be a distraction. But once the core funnel works and the challenge becomes trust, credibility, market presence, or conversion efficiency at scale, OOH starts to make a lot more sense.

That is really the reframe here. OOH is not just an awareness flex. In Indonesia, for finance brands, it can be part of the trust infrastructure. It helps the market believe you are real. It helps prospects feel safer entering the funnel. And maybe more overlooked than all of that, it reminds existing clients that you are still here, still operating, and not disappearing with their money. In this category, that reassurance is not soft. It is operational.

So do forex brokers and fintechs need OOH?

Not always. Not early. Not blindly.

But when the business problem is trust, legitimacy, visibility, and staying power, yes, they probably do.
